TO THE GLORY OF GOD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Study No. 8
SHARING
THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT...Thou shalt not steal.
Key Thoughts: Productivity
Active consideration of others
The Problem: Immaturity expressed in laziness, greed and
selfishness.
Money is not only for buying what is needed, but for giving to
those in greater need. This requires a heart for others, a
willingness to sacrifice self interest. A giving heart is truly
a mark of correct life priorities. 2 Cor. 8:1-5.
To have money one must have earning capacity. This means
training and discipline. The material expectations of any
individual must be realistically proportional to his earning
capacity. Proverbs 6:1-8.
The Characteristics Of A Thief.
Undiscipline...Laziness.
He has no control over his hands to work, or over his mind to
concentrate, Proverbs 10:5. Also habitual choice against any
work effort freezes him into indolence, Proverbs 21:25.
Indifference Toward People...Materialism.
If he never has enough for himself then others have no approach
to him, Proverbs 21:13. Friendless, he will turn to material
things for satisfaction, Proverbs 21:26. He will feel
underpriviliged, inferior and bitter.
Isolationism...Deceitfulness.
Others are of no consequence to him. "They have enough" he
reasons. They become the "enemy". It becomes his right to take,
anything seems legitimate. The most important thing is to have
what he wants. It is of no relevance to him who might be
deprived by his action.
Social Irresponsibility...
Such people can never be anything but a burden, materially and a
worry, emotionally. Proverbs 24:30-34; 10:26.
What Does God Require Of Such A Man?
1. He must count his life as loss to know Christ. Phil. 3:8.
2. He must seek God for the Holy Spirit in order to gain a new
attitude towards his fellow man.
3. He must, by faith in God, face up to his life of
responsibilities, including the material needs of those who
are dependent upon him. He must ask God for open eyes,
Proverbs 4:25-27 (cp.27:20), and accept the discipline of God
that will bring him into a revelation of Jesus Christ. Isaiah
30:20-21; 52:15-53:1. Only Christ can win his heart away from
himself. Eph. 4:28.
The Blessing.
Reading Luke 6:38, we find that gratitude is born in other
men as a result of open-handedness in giving. This is not
mercenary but recognition that the giver has become involved at
heart level.
